Centre for Refugee Research

The 1951 Refugee Convention

History

The Centre was established by Dr Barbara Ferguson (the first Director) in 1999, it was her drive and enthusiasm that made it happen. Eileen Pittaway from the School of Social Work took over as Director from Barbara, when Barbara retired from this position in mid 2000.

What we are and what we do

The Centre for Refugee Research is an interdisciplinary Centre at the University of New South Wales, which focuses on refugee flows and resettlement issues in the Asia Pacific Region. In partnership with state, national, regional and international agencies, the Centre is an initiator of research and innovative education programs. It is situated in the School of Social Work, who have provided office space for the Centre.

In July 2001, a small refugee advocacy group, the Australian National Committee on Refugee Women (ANCORW) joined the Centre and brought with it much needed resources and salary for a research assistant for one day per week. Through fundraising activities the Centre now employs three project workers who are assisted by volunteers and by a number of students who undertake student placements at the CRR and ANCORW. ANCORW board members provide the supervision of these students. The Centre is always a hive of activity.
